Prevalence
and Incidence of Chronic Disease
Using administrative
data, it is possible to calculate the number of patients in the
province with a chronic disease (the prevalence), and the number
of new cases identified each year (the incidence). Knowledge of
these numbers, and how they are changing over time, is essential
for the proper planning of health services and professional practice.
Diabetes
The table,
Prevalence
of Diabetes in B.C. (PDF 30Kb), shows that only a small proportion
of the population have diabetes when young, but the rate rises
to almost 1 in 5 of those over 70 years of age. Death rates for
people with diabetes are slightly higher than the general population,
but the figures also show that some people with diabetes in British
Columbia are over a hundred years old.
