Why have a provincial pharmacy network?

  • Prevent over-consumption of prescription drugs by unintended duplication or fraud.
  • Prevent inappropriate therapies by drug interaction checking and dosage range checking.
  • Promote cost-effective usage of drugs and other therapeutic alternatives.
  • Improve standards of practice by offering comprehensive drug information and complete patient information.
  • Streamline claims payments by offering immediate adjudication for pharmacies and the public.

Each year, thousands of British Columbians are hospitalized as a result of negative reactions to medication. For seniors, the risks are particularly high. Studies show that one out of every four seniors admitted to hospitals in B.C. is admitted because of medication interactions, duplications or misuse of prescription drugs.

PharmaNet is a secure computer network that increases drug safety by linking pharmacies throughout B.C. Although individual pharmacies already keep medication profiles for their clients and have existing procedures to cross-check for prescription drug interactions, most pharmacists cannot verify your profile if you use more than one pharmacy to fill your prescriptions.

PharmaNet provides up-to-the-minute information about all prescription medications dispensed to you anywhere in B.C. so your pharmacist can quickly identify - and warn you about - potentially harmful medication interactions. PharmaNet is also available to hospital emergency rooms and doctors' offices.
